Book Review: The Principles of Applied Stupidity

Posted by Jenise Fryatt on Mon, May 17, 2010 @ 04:09 PM

Social Media offers us some WONDERFUL opportunities to connect with like-minded people that we would never have otherwise connected with.  I feel extremely fortunate to have actually had brief Twitter conversations with several of my social media heroes including Liz Strauss, Tim Sanders and Chris Brogan. Then there are those I meet first as Twitter friends, & then come to view as heroes later. Justin Locke is one of those.

Leadership, marketing & stupidity: An interview with Justin Locke

Posted by Jenise Fryatt on Mon, May 17, 2010 @ 03:58 PM

Folks in the #eventprofs Twittersphere may be familiar with Justin Locke. Justin's event profession is that of a speaker. He tells amusing stories of his life as a professional musician, and shares a unique artistic approach to management, leadership, marketing, and creativity. He's also been known to drop in on the #eventprofs Twitter chat from time to time. As a bassist for the Boston Pops for 18 years and then later working in a managerial capacity, Justin learned a lot about leadership and uncovering personal potential. Now a speaker, author and playwright, his programs for family concerts have been done for hundreds of thousands of people all over the world. Here's a quick sample, his latest demo:

Events industry: It's time to step out from behind the curtain

Posted by Jenise Fryatt on Mon, May 03, 2010 @ 03:02 PM

OK so it looks like maybe the events industry is beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Business is starting to pick up, albeit slowly. The mistaken perception that corporate events are solely the realm of tax-money wasting, Wall Street fat cats has been devastating. The accompanying blow leveled by the great recession still has us reeling. Yet, as we pick ourselves up and dust off it's imperative that we consider how we will reshape our industry's image.

We know that events and meetings have always greased the wheels of global enterprise. Yet for years we've been happy to play our part behind the scenes. It took the AIG debacle to make us realize that maybe being so low key about our accomplishments wasn't such a good idea.

If it takes 5 positive comments to counteract a negative one and AIG is an entire story's worth of negativity, we will have to effectively tell at least 5 positive stories about our industry to fully undo the damage. Believe it or not, that's not as hard as you'd think. Here are six stories that we should be shouting at every opportunity:

1 - The unconference movement

Birthed by the blog community, the unconference movement is infecting events with an unwillingness to settle for less than satisfying intellectual and social experiences. The innovative methods of the TED conferences shown in video all over the internet give us a glimpse of how such events contribute to the advancement of our intellectual discourse.

2 - Social media communities spawn offline events

Social media communities are inevitably leading to offline events and meetings that serve to greatly strengthen these communities. These, until very recently, unimaginable networks of people from widely varying cultures and locations magnify our ability to do just about anything, and are dissolving barriers which had been thought insurmountable.

3 - Virtual events and social media technology are widening our reach

Virtual events and social media technology are adding even more ways for people to receive conference content and interact on and offline providing educational opportunities that are often free and increasing the level of public intellectual discourse.

4 - The sustainable meetings movement

The sustainable meetings movement very clearly demonstrates that there is a strong push in this industry toward progressive, mindful strategies that consider our impact on the planet. Rather than deny the findings of science, leaders of the sustainable meetings movement have challenged us to accept responsibility and seek a lighter carbon footprint for meetings. In doing so, they have found that many sustainable practices actually save on costs.

5 - Events are demonstrably GOOD for the economy

A landmark study recently revealed that meetings, events and performance incentive travel meetings in the United States are responsible for almost 15% of all domestic travel, generating 1 million jobs and $27 billion in wages.

6 - Meetings and events are demonstrably GOOD for business

According to a recent survey of Fortune 1,000 Chief Marketing Officers, meetings and events provide the highest return on investment of any marketing channel. We have a LOT of good news to share. It's time to take the conversation to a different level. Yes we need to address our weaknesses with an eye toward improvement, but we also need to champion our strengths. It's time for us to step out from behind the curtain and take a bow for all that meetings have accomplished in the past and for the great things our industry will make possible in the future.

26 things I learned about #eventprofs at Event Camp

Posted by Jenise Fryatt on Mon, May 03, 2010 @ 10:24 AM

Event Camp, or #EC10, took place Feb. 6 and was the first unconference for events industry professionals. It was organized by members of eventprofs, the group of events industry professionals that meets on Twitter twice a week for chats, and also posts helpful events industry information under the #eventprofs hashtag. After months of tweeting with my eventprofs friends, I was fortunate enough to attend #EC10 and the following is a list of new things I learned about
